Dont mess with a good thing. Smith Forefront the helmet that started it all for Smith bike helmets is back and now available with MIPS. Smith designers had so much fun with their mountain bike helmet that they e since adapted the technology to other helmets. For their first foray into cycling in 2013 they created a winning design and besides the addition of MIPS technology it one they haven felt compelled to change much since. Smith uses its proprietary Aerocore Koroyd construction to create an inner layer resembling a honeycomb that wraps around your head protected by the traditional outer EPS foam shell meant to absorb initial impact. MIPS or Multi Directional Impact Protection System refers to the Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of a thin inner layer that rotates slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy created in certain crashes. An effective design feature to note is the Forefront coverage of the lower back of the head an area vulnerable in crashes and one that not all helmets protect. To make sure all of the safety features don leave you feeling overheated Smith added its new X-Static performance cooling liner to this year Forefront and kept the 21 air vents it had previously. And although the Forefront focuses primarily on safety it doesn do so at the expense of style. The helmet was also treated with an adjustable visor that can be removed if desired and it built to fully integrate with sunglasses goggles headlights or cameras. It finished off with a goggle retention strap as well as Smith VaporFit adjustable fit system to help you dial in just the right fit and feel.
