In 1955, coming off a losing effort, but an impressive showing against Rocky Marciano, Archie Moore took part of his $270,000 earnings and bought 120 acres of barren land in Ramona, California He converted the property, which was located at the base of Mount Woodson, into his personal training retreat and called it “Archie Moore’s Salt Mine” The land consisted of five houses, a long stretch of road for doing roadwork and a gymnasium that was called the "Bucket of Blood” He took great pride in the fact that “The Mine” employed no staff Fighters who trained there were expected to help out and pitch in to do all of the necessary chores, including; cooking, cleaning and chopping wood, on top of their daily training regimen
